Are you the once proud owner of a website that never quite lived up to its expectations? The reason is most likely that you are not following the correct internet marketing strategy. Below are a couple of tips to get you thinking in the right direction.

A good first step would be to consult a internet marketing expert. Even if you don’t sign up for a whole marketing program with one of these guys, let them at least look at your website and give their opinion as to what should be done.

On the surface everything might look fine: the flash animations might work perfectly and visually everything may look stunning. The problem is your website might simply not be what the average search engine wants. In other words it is not optimized for search engine traffic.

Content planning: You should have a clear strategy when it comes to website content. The days of having a home page, an about us page and a contact form and nothing else are over forever. To get new visitors and retain current visitors, you need quality content that speaks to those people. And that content needs to be updated on a regular basis, otherwise you are wasting your own and your visitors’ time. Search engines also hate no-content websites.

Pay-per-click programs: To build up a decent ranking on search engines like Yahoo and Google takes time. If you don’t have a good ranking yet, and you have some available funds, a pay-per-click search engine might be your best answer for the short and medium term. You will pay a certain amount for every visitor that clicks on a search engine listing and goes to your website. The better known search engines charge much more per click than the less known ones and the quality of visitors are not necessarily better.

Articles directories: There are many directories on the Internet where you can submit an article which you have written about a subject relating to your website. Let’s say you have a furniture removal business. You could then submit a series of articles on how to prepare for a move, insurance, pitfalls of the industry etc. And submit them to one or more of these directories. You will be allowed to mention your company name and insert a link to your website at the end of the article. This is a way in which you can become known and an expert in your line of business and get free publicity in the process.

One other thing: Make sure your website can be accessed from a mobile device. You might be surprised to learn how many people access the web on a daily basis from a device other than a computer. Cell phones are increasingly equipped to access the web, and you don’t want to lose out on this valuable source of potential visitors during your internet marketing campaign.

Online marketing campaigns all have the same basic objective; they are designed to generate sales and/or capture the contact information of visitors. Internet marketing has been touted as one of the best and easiest ways to make money on the web. More impressive still, you can make this money with little work or effort, with the whole business running on auto-pilot. The question is, can internet marketing really be such a simple and hands-free way to make money? What’s the catch? The fact is, there is a catch; contrary to what is often said or implied, online marketing does require actual work and dedication. With all the hype out there, people often believe they can simply put up a quick website and start making thousands of dollars right away. There is a simple fact that has to be learned -internet marketing is a business and has to be run like one. All businesses involve products or services, customers and money; internet marketing is no exception. Those who expect to make their quick fortunes and then retire quickly are not facing reality. There are some great benefits to internet marketing; for one thing, you can start your business on a shoestring and build it into a great financial empire. But this is something few understand. The fact is, all of the most successful companies you see online -think of Google- are really examples of successful internet marketing. What do they do -they sell ads and millions of people use them to sell whatever they are offering. So internet marketing is actually a huge, worldwide business. Like any business, you need to follow a systematic course of action, be willing to take calculated risks and work towards your goals. In this article we will be discussing a few Internet marketing tactics that can help you get targeted visitors to your site.

One of the most tried and true ways to market online is by participating in forums. Find forums that are centered around your niche; this means you will be around people who are likely to be interested in what you are offering. Don’t try to post ads or links in forum posts, which is likely to get you banned; use another, more subtle approach to forum marketing. You can take advantage of the forum signature, where you put your website link; when you post to the forum, you want to be a member who contributes valuable information that will be appreciated. This way you can still promote your site, but indirectly, and you won’t be accused of spamming the forum.

You don’t have to post direct links to your site in the forum when posting because this might lead to you being banned completely. There’s no need to do this, as you can effectively promote yourself through the signature. It’s not really worth it to go out there and spam the forums, as they are a medium that can help you drive targeted traffic if done the right way. Use forums as part of your online strategy, but don’t think you can get away with spamming them.

The most reliable tactics to market your website and get traffic still remains Search Engine Optimization. Time-tested SEO techniques are the most reliable and safest methods to find targeted website visitors. It’s a fact that Google accounts for more than 80 percent of search engine queries on the net. Build as many links as you can pointing at your sites; but also be sure to create good content if you want high search engine rankings. This will give you consistent traffic you can count on. As experts have refined these and other strategies, internet marketing has become one of the best and most profitable businesses you can launch. There is no other business that allows you the freedom to sell something on autopilot to people all over the world. Copyright 2006 Alicia M Forest and ClientAbundance.com Whenever someone new visits your website, your #1 goal is to get them on your email list. That way you have a method of keeping them up-to-date on your latest offerings, so when they’re ready to hire you or buy your product, you’re right there in their inbox. And having a way for them to join your list that is both simple and effective will dramatically increase both your list numbers and your sales. Here are the three biggest mistakes I see regularly on business websites: 1. Not having a way to capture your visitors. Most people don’t bite on the first pass, and once they click away, it’s unlikely they’ll be back. Don’t lose them by not having a way for them to sign up for your list. 2. The opt-in box is buried. If your visitor can’t find the form to sign up, then how can they? TIP: Testing shows that the upper right-hand corner of your webpage is still the best spot for your opt-in box. 3. The sign-up form says something unenticing like “click here for mailing list” – ugh!

So, here are 5 proven ways that you can instantly increase your opt-in rates: 1. Give your visitor only one choice. Some of you may have heard of a 1-banana or a single action website, which is exactly that. You’re giving your visitor only one option – sign up for your list via your free ezine, special report, checklist, ebook, etc. They get their freebie in exchange for giving you their email address. One of my clients recently implemented this idea for her coaching business, which was a big leap of faith for her. I just got a joyful email from her saying that she’s noticed a substantial increase in her opt-ins since! It works, so don’t be afraid to try it. And by the way, a testimonial or two on your 1-banana website doesn’t hurt either. 2. Write enticing copy. Remember that people tend to skim what they read online, so make sure you have an attention-getting headline and some additional brief copy describing the benefits your visitor will receive by signing up for your list. As always, make sure it answers the most prominent question in your visitor’s mind, “what’s in it for me?” 3. Have only two form fields: First Name and Primary Email If you capture someone’s name along with their email address, you can easily personalize any future correspondence with them, which is proven to increase open and response rates.

Probably the most critical part of Internet marketing for your business is organizing your website so it will achieve your overall goals.  But this critical step is usually the one business people skip, or just leave it to their web designer to consider, which can be even more damaging to their overall goals.

The process of carefully planning the outline of a new website or upgrade to an existing website will secure for you not only a vehicle to show off your business in the best light, but also one that you are able to control the process of updating content, and, most importantly, achieve your business goals.  Here are a number of important steps to take in the website planning process:

        1.  Write down on a piece of paper everything you think the visitors to your web site might want to know about your product or service.  For example, visitors to a school’s website would probably want to know the attendance levels, size of the classrooms, information on staff members and what sports they can participate in.  Try to list every possible topic about your industry, service or product that a visitor to your new website might be interested in knowing.

        2.  Imagine for a short time that you are a potential website customer.  Surf the Internet and visit various sites offering similar services, then review them as a potential customer would.  As a potential customer, what are the things you like and dislike about each website you visit?  Are you inspired to take action from the website?  How easily can you find what you are looking for? How many times do you have to click to find what you are looking for?  Note all this data down with the intent of making your new website as easy for your visitors to use as possible.

        3.  Investigate to find out the keywords your visitors will most likely search for to find your website. Google has a free keyword research tool that will work fine for this purpose.  Enter a general phrase related to your product or service, such as “coffee filters” and other related keywords will appear.  Your visitors already have questions about these things.  With this information in hand, you can plan your website to feature content that answers people’s questions.

        4.  Plan your new website so that it can expand.  Avoid websites that can’t be easily expanded to add more pages or products.  A website is not static, but rather should change constantly to meet your customer needs.

        5.  The final thing to keep in mind is that you want to be able to control your new website, rather than be at the mercy of your web designer to make even the simplest of changes.   Today’s dynamic Internet marketing environment demands new and fresh content added to your website often, and the old fashioned sites that rely on a web developer to make changes just won’t work anymore.  Your new website should be on a platform that lets you add content quickly and easily.

The investment by your business into a new website is a large part of your marketing budget.  It is critical to take the time to plan a new website that is compatible with your business goals.
