10 Critical Technology Basics for Online Businesses
Technology is an important consideration for any internet marketing business, but generally people just starting out don’t have a good knowledge of the technologies required or how it will affect their establishment.
These ten tips ought to help you get off to a good start. Try to set up systems and processes that integrate easily, and are accessible all of the time to sustain purchasers and prospects.
Develop an automated system if you want to make your life simple and your bank account fat.
1. Computer & Peripherals
If you’re going to do online marketing, you’ll need a computer – hopefully one that you own, a standard model or a laptop. You’ll need one with plenty of memory and speed. A broadband internet connection is desireable rather than dial-up. You’ll also want a printer. If you can, get both with wireless capabilities.
2. Your Personal Domain
Be certain to obtain a domain name that you own, so that you can set out~start} to create your own brand. Moreover, some providers won’t permit you to include affiliate links, or even subdomains, but only a domain that you personally own. A superior website name will be short (30 characters or less), meaningful when either heard or seen, and representative of your product or service. The most favored names end in “.com” and such names are favorite for many online marketing companies, provided they’re obtainable.
3. Communications
Another necessary tool is communications, including an ISP and a telephone – either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset, whichever you like. It ought to have both local and long distance features, and if you plan to hold conferences for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do trainings, etc., you’ll probably want to obtain a teleconferencing service that can handle many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, callers at the same time.
4. Hosting Services
You’ll need a web host to serve as a “home” for your website. There are many such companies on hand to help home businesses and internet marketers. Their capabilities do differ, as do their costs, so be sure to shop around before reaching a decision.
5. Data & Systems Precautions
You’ll also want good protection for your software and data. This can take the form of physical security, plus technologies such as firewalls, and security programs like McAfee or Norton.
6. Data & Systems Backup/Restore Programs
Yet another requirement is for backup of your locally resident systems and data. In spite of other security measures, there will eventually come a situation when you undergo a system crash, with either partial or complete loss of information and key systems. Consequently you will also need a robust backup and restore system.
7. Goods
You’ll have to have one or more products to sell – products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by other people. If you develop your own goods, then you’ll also have to worry about maintaining appropriate inventories, performing upgrades, handling returns, etc. If you get your products from third parties, then you’ll have to work at supply relationship management, order fulfillments, customers are satisfied and proper payment.
8. Affiliate Program Network
If you’re planning to advertise several affiliate products, you’ll probably also want to participate with one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, CJ, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.
9. Web 2.0 Features
The internet is very dynamic, so if you want to succeed in today’s internet world, you’ll want websites and services that allow blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to support a whole host of interaction, using the web as the network platform).
10. Technical Support
Finally – again a regularly overlooked necessity – is the need for reliable technical support – for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.
If your customer-facing systems go down and you are not able to get prompt technical support from any/all your suppliers, the ensuing downtime can crash your marketing campaigns, you can lose or annoy potential buyers, and ultimately, your income will suffer (and your brand, as well).
Technology is the lifeblood of an affiliate business, and given Murphy’s Law, you must to arrange for the ultimate downtime and computer crashes that happen as well. Applying all these essential technologies will help the success of your internet business.
