It was first published 126 years ago and is respected the world over. But the Oxford English Dictionary will never appear in print again, its owners have announced. Instead, the 80 lexicographers who have been working on the third edition for the past 21 years have been told the fruits of their labour will exist solely online. The OED has been available on the internet for the past ten years and receives two million hits a month from subscribers who pay £205 a year, plus VAT, to access it. Oxford University Press says the dominance of the internet...

Film director Roland Emmerich, whose last effort was the apocalyptic "2012," has begun shooting "Anonymous." It won't be another disaster movie -- except perhaps for English professors. According to Emmerich, the film is "about how it came to be that William Shakespeare was not the author of his plays," which, he says, turn out to have been written by the "Earl of Oxford." Emmerich calls "Anonymous" a political thriller. "It's about who will succeed Elizabeth and the cause of that thriller, the Essex Rebellion." The film, starring Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth...will have "kings, queens, and princes," he adds. "It's...

By Geoffrey Levy 06th March 2010 Alpha minds in and around Westminster that normally grapple with issues such as the forthcoming election, the sinking pound and the war in Afghanistan, were turned this week towards a ticklish and wholly unexpected political mystery. November 16, 2003 A Muslim Scholar Raises Hackles in FranceBy ELAINE SCIOLINO SAINT-DENIS, France, Nov. 13 Of all the Muslim leaders in Europe, perhaps none has more visibility and more faces than Tariq Ramadan. To many experts on Islam, Mr. Ramadan, a 41-year-old, Swiss-born philosophy professor, is a respectable scholar who promotes a moderate, tolerant version of Islam from his headquarters in Geneva and in his lectures around the world. To his Muslim followers in the rough suburbs of France, he is a spiritual guide whose passionate speeches and cassette tapes inspire them to throw themselves and their beliefs...

Bouncing around on the trend-tossed seas of 21st-century book publishing, Mormon scholarship seems to have docked at the granddaddy of all prestigious presses: Oxford University. By all accounts, the unlikely partnership between the oldest university in the English-speaking world and an upstart American faith seems to be working. Mormon writers, particularly historians, get the academic credibility they crave and Oxford sells a lot of books. Two years ago, Oxford University Press published Massacre at Mountain Meadows by Ronald W. Walker, Richard E. Turley Jr. and Glen M. Leonard, three LDS Church scholars. The harrowing account of the 1857 slaughter of...

Boffins in the buff: Oxford uni students strip off for naked charity calendar By TAMARA COHEN 08th June 2009 They are pictured doing what Oxbridge students do: poring over their books, champagne-guzzling and punting on the river. But there is one small difference. These brainy undergraduates at Oxford University seem have to mislaid their gowns...and all the rest of their clothing.
